Interconnection of Distributed Generation

Distributed generation (DG) systems are typically small-scale power generation technologies installed by customers and used to provide an alternative to or an enhancement of the traditional electric power system. Examples of DG include solar panels, wind turbines and cogeneration units to name a few.
If you’re considering installing generation, you must adhere to the Standards for Interconnecting Distributed Generation tariff
(PDF:523KB).
In accordance with the tariff, the interconnecting customer should consult WMECO before designing, purchasing or installing any generation equipment in order to verify the voltage and phase characteristics of a customer’s service and the characteristics of WMECO’s distribution system that the customer is fed from.
Customers must submit an application and receive approval prior to installing distributed generation. Depending on the size of the proposed DG system, approvals can take two weeks to several months.
The size and type of the proposed DG system will determine which application process a customer should follow for electrical interconnection.
You will follow the simplified process and use the Simplified application
(PDF:219KB) if you intend to install:
- A single phase inverter-based system that is 10 kW or less on a single phase service, or
- A three phase inverter-based system that is 25 kV or less on a three phase service; and
- You must be on a radial distribution circuit
You will follow the expedited process and use the Expedited/Standard application
(PDF:190KB) if you intend to install:
- A system that is greater than 10 kW single phase, or greater than 25 kW three phase; and
- Your proposed generation equipment must meet IEEE 1547.1 standards; and
- You must be on a radial distribution circuit
You will follow the standard process and use the Expedited/Standard application
(PDF:190KB) if you intend to install:
- A non-inverter based generator, co-generator, wind, hydro or other facility; and
- For all facilities not qualifying for the simplified or expedited process
If you are installing distributed generation, or already have a generator, you may be eligible for net metering, a method of measuring the energy consumed and produced by a customer’s generating facility. If you are a customer applying for electrical interconnection, and you want to be considered for net metering, you must also submit the net metering application
(PDF:116KB).
