Home Improvement

  • Weather-stripping and caulking around doors and windows will help rid your house of drafts and prevent heated or cooled air from escaping.
  • Repair and seal heating and cooling ducts. Leaky ducts account for about 40 percent of all heating and cooling losses and it helps to prevent high humidity levels in your home. Seal seams and joints in ductwork with duct tape and insulate them with vinyl-backed fiberglass insulation.
  • Proper insulation in walls, ceilings and floors significantly reduces heat loss in your home. Upgrade the attic insulation to R-30 and R-19 under the floor. Walls should be insulated to R-13.
  • Wrap your water heater with proper insulation to save energy.
  • Be sure that your fireplace has a tight fitting damper and keep it closed when the fireplace is not in use.
  • Fix leaky hot water faucets.
  • Install properly sized ENERGY STAR® labeled ventilation fans in your bathroom to control moisture in the air while you shower or bathe. The removal of moist air helps dry out your bathroom, preventing mold and mildew.
