- Make sure your heating and cooling systems are properly maintained, including replacing dirty air filters and cleaning intake screens, condenser coils, supply registers and return grills.
- Encourage employees with window offices to open shades or blinds on sunny days to take advantage of natural light heat and reduce the burden on the heating system.
- Turn back, or turn off heating and cooling equipment when not needed. Following this practice for one hour of operation out of every 12 can mean an energy savings of up to 8 percent.
- Repair damaged or disconnected ducts, ensure duct joints and elbows are well sealed and insulate duct work in unconditioned spaces.
- Replacing old cooling and heating equipment with more efficient, ENERGY STAR® qualified equipment is a sure way to save energy and money.
- Lubricate all moving parts in your heating and cooling system. Parts that lack lubrication cause friction in motors and increase the amount of electricity you use.
- Keep vents closed in unoccupied areas to prevent heating or cooling of storage areas and closets.
- Inspect all gas or oil connections, the gas pressure, burner combustion and heat exchange systems. A dirty burner or cracked heat exchanger can cause improper burner operation resulting in the equipment operating less efficiently. Improperly connections are also a fire hazard and can contribute to health problems in the workplace.
- Reduce fresh air intake to the minimum necessary for your type of business.
- Install paddle fans, stratotherm fans, or other re-circulating systems to create air movement. Ceiling temperatures can often be 30 to 40 degrees higher than floor temperatures, and air movement from fans can enhance the cooling ability of air conditioning systems.
- Install air conditioner economizers to use outside air to cool buildings when outdoor air is lower than indoor temperatures.
- Check and inspect the condensate drain in your central air conditioner, furnace and/or heat pump (when in cooling mode). A plugged drain can cause water damage in the house and affect indoor humidity levels.
- Clean and adjust blower components to provide proper system airflow for greater comfort levels. Airflow problems can reduce your system's efficiency by up to 15 percent.
